Renovated Goodman in Hammond Wood

This renovated Charles Goodman-designed mid-century modern is conveniently located in Hammond Wood, a National Register of Historic Places-Designated neighborhood of 58 homes nestled in a tract of heavily wooded, rolling land. The design and renovation, overseen by the award-winning Cook Architecture, transformed the original 3 bed/2 bath home into a stunning 4 bedroom/2 full bath modern space worthy of Dwell magazine.
The two-level, 1,710 square-foot home features a $60K open kitchen with Poggenpohl cabinets, brand-new bathrooms and walls of new double-pane, low-e insulated glass. Refinished hardwoods, custom wood closet doors and use of reclaimed wood for the downstairs ceiling bring natural materials and warmth into the home. Vintage lighting harks back to the home’s 1951 design, which was featured in Progressive Architecture at the time. The home has all new plumbing, electrical and added insulation. New recessed lighting and adjustable art lights have been installed throughout the house.
The main level features the open kitchen-dining-living space, two bedrooms and one bathroom. Goodman’s signature large fireplace anchors one end of the open living space while the new kitchen anchors the other. The kitchen features Poggenpohl cabinets, quartz-topped countertop with L-shaped bar for entertaining and custom walnut shelves.The backsplash is crafted from Royal Mosa tile from Holland. The refrigerator is Liebherr and the dishwasher and range are Bosch.
While keeping the original footprint intact, the lower level was completely rethought, creating two bedrooms out of one and combining spread out utility rooms into one dedicated utility, laundry room and storage area.
To create the two-above grade bedrooms, tons of dirt was excavated from the house, replaced with a retaining wall and large concrete patio. A wood-slat design along the patio mirrors the horizontal wood siding above. A small brick patio in the backyard creates more outdoor space amid the mature trees.
Hammond Wood is located just north of Kensington and just over a mile from the Wheaton Metro (Red Line). A Ride On bus stop is just steps from the front door. The home is convenient to the restaurants, shopping and entertainment options in Wheaton, downtown Silver Spring, Rockville and Bethesda. NIH and the Navy Medical Center are just a few minutes away.
