Early Modernist Townhome in Mt. Pleasant

Here’s my latest listing. It will be open Sunday, Oct. 5 from 1 to 4 pm. The home is a 1943  modernist townhouse perched in the trees on Harvard Hill in Mount Pleasant.

Designed by well-known Washington architects Julian Berla and Joseph Abel, the three-level renovated townhome features updated kitchen, bathrooms and windows while retaining some of the original architectural details and new modernist touches. It is listed for $765,000 and located here.

The heart of the house is the middle level with its open kitchen- dining-living space with its wall of windows on the front and sliding glass door on the back leading to the backyard. The renovated kitchen features stainless steel appliances, glass-front cabinets and moveable island. Modernist lighting, ceiling fan and window treatments marry well with the original hardwood floors, built-in bookshelves and original lattice work design along the stairs.

The top-floor living space includes two bedrooms and one bathroom. The master bedroom at the front features a wall of glass, custom window treatments and modernist ceiling fan. The second bedroom, currently used as a nursery, has newly installed blackout shades. The lower level, or entrance level, includes the third bedroom, second bathroom, laundry space and storage.

The fenced-in yard is perfect for entertaining with its wood deck, hot tub and grass area. The backyard gate leads to two parking spaces.

The Berla and Abel design was featured in Architectural Forum, which said, “Unlike most other nearby houses, these are designed to capitalize fully on the hilltop site. Large windows, which rise from the living room floor, open the room to the view.”

Tucked in near the National Zoo, the house is conveniently located just a half mile from the Columbia Heights Metro and a mile north of the restaurants and shops of 14th and U streets.
