Custom MCM in Owings Mills
This custom mid-century modern on a stunning 3.5 acre private lot in Velvet Valley in Owings Mills was originally designed and built in 1960 by noted architect James Grieves, FAIA, as his own home. It was later (1980s) seamlessly expanded by another noted local architect, David H. Gleason, FAIA. (Photos by John Cole.)
The one-level home, which includes 4 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms over 3,736 sq. ft., was designed to blend inside and out and to take advantage of the secluded, wooded lot. The house features walls of double-pane glass and each room has a door to access the outdoors. Exterior concrete walkways continue into the main and carport entrances to further the connection between the interior and exterior spaces. Beams from the dramatic wood-beamed ceilings extend outside to support extended eaves.
In addition to the 4 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms, the house includes a large open kitchen, separate dining room, living room, family room/den/library and sitting area as part of the master suite.
The main entrance, surrounded by a Japanese-like courtyard, steps down into the living room with walls of glass and stunning brick-wall fireplace with full-length hearth that extends outside as a bench. Just off the living room is the separate dining room with custom built-in hanging credenzas. The family room/den/library room has built-in bookshelves and entertainment equipment storage.
The large, open renovated kitchen features wood cabinets, a large island with architectural resin countertop, two sinks, recycled paper countertops and stainless steel and glass tile back splash. Appliances are stainless steel, including a Bosch cooktop.
The kitchen opens to the screened-in porch as well as the patio that runs along the back of the house. Another patio surrounds the former pool, which the current owners turned into a pond habitat. (Former pool systems convey as-is.)
The entrance from the two-car carport, with its newly rebuilt extensive storage shed, is just off the kitchen along with laundry room and mud area with storage for coats and shoes.
The private master suite is at the top end of the L-shaped home. Walls of glass and fireplace mark the secluded space. The master bathroom features a stunning sunken shower with wall of glass and door that opens to a small, private courtyard. A sitting area is perfect for reading or watching television. The three other bedrooms run along the vertical wing of the house. One of the unique design features is the bump-out closets that protrude from the house so they do not take up interior space.
The home is located in beautiful Velvet Valley amid a cluster of other mid-century modern and contemporary homes. It is 13 miles from Johns Hopkins University, 10 miles to Towson and less than 17 miles to the Inner Harbor. Schools are Woodholme Elementary, Pikesville Middle School and Owings Mills High School.
