Cross & Adreon in Glen Echo Heights
Designed by leading local modernist architecture firm Cross & Adreon and built by Matthews and Schwartz, this 1964 mid-century modern is set on a deep, .36 acre lot in the desirable Glen Echo Heights neighborhood of Bethesda. (Take a video tour here.)
Eason Cross, FAIA, who studied at Harvard with Bauhaus masters Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer, passed away in late January 2016 at the age of 90. Cross worked for Charles M. Goodman early in his career and was a long-time resident of Hollin Hills. Cross was well-known for his award-winning modernist housing designs. The design for the house appears to be an early version of his later award-winning modernist “Barn” house design, with its steep side gabled roof line.
The central focus of the 5 bedroom/2.5 bath 2,242 square-foot home is the expansive main floor (second-floor) open living-dining-kitchen area with beautiful refinished hardwoods, wood-burning fireplace and walls of glass that allows for unfettered views of nature and access to the wooded backyard. The kitchen has beautiful original mid-century wood cabinets with extensive storage and shelving, vintage built-in divider to close off the kitchen if desired and brand new Kitchen Aid stainless steel appliances.
The main level also includes the master suite, which opens to a screened-in porch, second bedroom and powder room. The custom master bathroom, with double sinks, walk in shower and radiant floor heating, and the guest powder room were designed by a local “green” architect. They include several green features such as dual flush toilets, recycled content materials, and day lighting.
The ground-floor entrance reflects the home’s modern architectural pedigree with floor-to- ceiling wall of glass and dramatic open stairway with wood-slat screen design, which plays off the exterior siding design. The ground level includes a 5th room, currently used as an exercise space, and large light-filled laundry/storage/workshop area.
The home’s top level features a soaring cathedral ceiling with remote operated sky lights with, 2 bedrooms, 1 full updated bathroom and attic storage space.
In addition to the screened-in porch off the master, a wood deck with built-in benches and walking path amid the mature trees help connect the home with the natural surroundings.
Glen Echo Heights is known for its top-rated schools and close-in location. The house is a short walk to two buses that go to Metro and one that goes directly to downtown DC. It is also close to major commuting arteries including River Road, Massachusetts Avenue, MacArthur Boulevard, Canal Road and the Beltway.
The community swimming pool and park/playground are just a short walk away. Glen Echo Park and the C&O trail are less than one mile. The house includes transfer rights for Mohican Swimming Pool Association ($1000 transfer fee).
