Award-Winning Design by David Jameson

Here’s my latest listing. I think you are going to enjoy this one. Designed by acclaimed architect David Jameson, FAIA, to connect with the wooded site and display the work of local artists, the home has won three awards, including the 2013 Northern Virginia Chapter AIA Award of Excellence and the 2013 Washington DC AIA / Washingtonian Residential Design Award. See the full listing and slideshow. See the floor plans here.

Located in Bethesda’s wonderful Mohican Hills neighborhood, just two miles north of Washington, D.C and minutes to the Potomac River, the home is elegantly scaled and sited on the deep .36 acre lot with mature trees. The 3,500 square foot home has 3 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms and a top-floor office/4th bedroom with 16-foot ceilings.

Steel, Glass and Natural Finishes

Clad in COR-TEN steel that will continue to develop a beautiful rusted patina with age, the home is constructed of steel with walls of commercial-grade glass, white concrete stucco and charred local Hemlock siding. Natural finishes of the highest quality can be found throughout—from the walnut pigment-stained bamboo front door to the 5″-wide white oak floors to the covered Ipe-wood floating deck.

Stunning Open Kitchen-Dining-Living Room

The heart of the house is the main floor with its open kitchen-dining-living area with soaring two-story ceiling marked by a stunning clerestory of one-story high glass. The kitchen features Thermador range, hood and column refrigerator and freezer, Bosch dishwasher, counters made of Danby marble from Vermont and Fumed Larch kitchen cabinets. A soaring skylight allows for additional light over the kitchen sink.

The living room has a two-story ceiling wrapped in glass to bring the outdoors in, which can be enjoyed on a flagstone terrace with steel railing designed by the architect. The living room also features a wood-burning fireplace made of flamed Labrador granite cantilevered on steel, also designed by the architect. Sliding glass doors provide access to a flagstone terrace with steel railing.

 Main-Level Master Suite

The master suite is situated on the main level for easy one-level living. The master bath features Chinchilla marble countertops, acid etched glass and Basalt shower tiles and floor. The shower has a shaft with roof skylight, continuing the theme of connecting the inside with the natural surroundings.

Soaring Office Space

As a nod to the home’s use of steel for its structure and exterior material, the architect employed steel in the design of the kitchen island and the hand-forged staircase with floating stairs leading to the home’s top level. The upstairs space has 16-foot ceilings and a wall of glass looking out to the backyard. The upstairs space can serve as an office, TV room or studio. With its full bathroom and walk-in closet, it can be used as a guest suite as well.

Three-Season Views of Potomac from Covered 2nd Story Deck

This flexible second-story space leads to the deck (completed in 2013) with its three season views of the Potomac River. The deck is constructed of Ipe. Floating on the lower roof of the home, the deck is covered by the high roof. The siding that forms a side wall for the covered deck is dark, dramatic Hemlock that was charred using the ancient Japanese Shou-sugi-ban technique of burning the wood, embedding the carbon released during burning and then applying a clear seal. A rain screen protects the framing, making it resistant to fire, rot and pests.

Lower Level: Living and Recreational Space

The home’s walkout lower level includes two bedrooms—one with direct access to the patio–one full bathroom, a perfect space to create children’s or guest wing. The large family room is ideal for a media center, exercise area or playroom. Utilities and storage space are also located on the lower level. The house is equipped with a dual-zone heating and cooling system.

Prime Location and Amenities

Located in the Mohican Hills Section of Bethesda’s Glen Echo Heights neighborhood, the home is close to downtown Washington, via MacArthur Blvd or Massachusetts Ave., to downtown Bethesda, and to Georgetown. For public transportation, the Friendship Heights Metro stop is easily accessed using RideOn.

The home is also just east of the Potomac River.  The Capital Crescent Trail, C&O Canal towpath are accessible by a short walk; Glen Echo Park and the Mohican Swimming Pool are also just down the hill. The house is one block from the Mohican Hills/Glen Echo Heights playground.
