The Friends of Hollin Hills is hosting a major symposium on architect Charles Goodman in September. The three-day program, “LIVING MODERN-BUILDING COMMUNITY,” will be held Sept. 13-15 and will celebrate the career of Charles Goodman, mid-century modern architect and community designer.
Goodman’s whole-community design, his emphasis on siting and creating workable family homes and his impact beyond the design of free-standing homes are the focus of the three-day weekend. Goodman communities in the DC-Virginia-Maryland metro area will be highlighted. The themes of the symposium will focus on:
- Architecture: Charles Goodman and the MCM Movement
- Preservation: Advocacy – How do we best protect what we cherish?
- Community and Livability: Inhabiting – Living in Goodman homes and communities today
Notable speakers and panels will explore Goodman design and how to live in and maintain Goodman homes. Focused sessions are designed for mid-century modern devotees and design professionals as well as those who live in Goodman homes. I will be speaking one panel focusing on key maintenance items to examine as you look at buying a Goodman home.
Visit classic Goodman custom designs during the opening at the Arlington Unitarian Church and the closing with home or walking tours in various Goodman communities, including Hollin Hills, Hammond Wood, Rock Creek Woods, Hickory Cluster and Highland Hills in Richmond. A tour and reception at the Sevareid House (renovated by Cook Architecture; see photos here) in Alexandria’s West End are available to VIP ticket holders.
