1964 Goodman on .44 Acres in the Woods
Sold November 25, 2014 for $585,000 - last offered at $585,000
Here’s my latest Charles Goodman-designed listing. It is located in Crest Park in the Hillandale area of Silver Spring on a nearly 1/2 acre lot at the end of a cul-de-sac backing to dramatic parkland. It is said that Goodman, who designed two dozen homes in the Crest Park subdivision, picked the choicest spots for his designs. And this is one of them. The house–the only Goodman currently for sale in Montgomery County– is listed for $599K and I will be holding an open house Sunday, Sept. 28 from 1-4 pm. You can view all the photos here.
Sited on a .44 acre lot nestled into Northwest Branch Park, this 1964 mid-century modern home has $50,000 in recent upgrades including brand new roof (2014), all new Kitchen Aid appliances, flagstone steps, modernist slat fencing and two gas fireplace conversions.
The central focus of the two-level, 5 bedroom/3 bathroom home is the main floor open living-dining area. The expansive space features Goodman’s signature large brick fireplaces, original hardwood floors and walls of glass that allow for unfettered views of the surrounding woods and wildlife. Original vintage touches in the 2,800 square foot home include redwood walls and stone-floor entranceway.
The home’s main level (upper level) features 3 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms, including master suite, which has sliders leading to the back deck so you can take in the surrounding trees.
The lower-lever features a large den with second gas fireplace and bar/second kitchen, two bedrooms, a full bathroom and large utility/laundry/storage room. The downstairs living space features bamboo flooring and can be used as an in-law or nanny suite with separate entrance and security system.
To take full advantage of the serene lot, the house features expansive outside living space that flows from the open living-dining area. A composite full-house length deck with cedar railing can be accessed through the living room and master suite. A large composite deck in the front of the house has easy access from the dining room making it an excellent space for entertaining (see below). In addition, the lower level walk out den opens to the fenced yard with flagstone patio and specimen plantings.
Conveniently located just off New Hampshire Avenue between Route 29 and the Beltway, the neighborhood is located across from the FDA’s White Oak campus and near plenty of shopping, including Trader Joe’s. The neighborhood swim club (also a mid-century design) and schools are located within walking distance.
