Chloethiel Woodard Smith Waterview Cluster Townhouse – $479K

At a recent event in Reston looking at the modernist architects who helped shape the planned community, Reston founder Robert E. Simon–going strong at 99–ended the program by speaking briefly about the vision and effort that went into building the thriving town from nothing. One of the architects Simon picked to help create the modernist suburb was Chloethiel Woodard Smith, FAIA. She  designed two main clusters of townhomes, Coleson Cluster and Waterview Cluster, which overlooks Lake Anne.

“The Smith cluster of townhouses with its soft pastel colors and charming balconies is reminiscent of a quaint French fishing village,” says an original brochure marketing the Waterview townhomes.  “All homes have a clear view of Lake Anne, and lakeshore townhouses have private boating and swimming facilities. There is an infinite variety of styles and models.”

Intrigued? Here is a 3 bedroom/2 bath, three-level Waterview Cluster townhouse listed for $479K.

I saw one of these on the Reston home tour a few years ago. It was GORGEOUS. And the cluster is tucked back behind the tower in such a sweet way. There’s a real feeling of seclusion despite being townhouses.

I am fascinated by Chloethiel Woodard Smith’s work. I became familiar with her when I moved to SW DC. Her signature is everywhere! I scoured local library collections and enthusiasts via the internet for information about her early work and found copies of the original marketing materials for my apartment building that fully map out the near neighborhood and her vision for its completion. They’re fantastic!
