Not interested in Colonials? Neither am I.
If you are looking to buy or sell a mid-century modern home in Maryland, Virginia or DC, you have come to the right place.
I am a licensed Realtor with Long & Foster in Maryland, D.C. and Virginia, specializes in marketing mid-century modern properties and helping buyers find just the right home for their families–and their cool furniture. I can be reached at 301-503-6171 or via e-mail me at email@example.com.
When my wife, daughter and I moved back to D.C. in 2005, I started looking for a resource about mid-century modern homes and neighborhoods in the area. I couldn’t find anything, so I started Modern Capital.
The site is dedicated to covering mid-century modern and modern real estate, design and events in the D.C. area. It also is committed to raising awareness and supporting efforts to preserve the region’s mid-century modern architecture.
This passion for informing people about the variety of mid-century modern homes in the area and an intense interest from readers looking for a real estate professional who understands and appreciates this type of architecture, led me to pursue my real estate license.
I am a proud supporter of the D.C. Preservation League, Docomomo-US, the National Building Museum, the National Trust for Historic Preservation the 2016 Hollin Hills House and Garden Tour. I also was recently elected as a Board Member of Docomomo DC.
“We’ve long been fans of Mike’s blog on mid-century homes, and no other agent can match his deep experience and appreciation for these homes. When Mike sold our mid-century gem, his research into its architectural history and his tailored marketing strategy undoubtedly went a long way to a quick sale at full price.”

“Before we sold my late mother’s house, we spoke to knowledgeable agents and appraisers. In a little more than a month on the market, Michael, by effectively marketing to home buyers interested the house’s mid-mod character, was able to bring in offers that were 10% to 15% above what the local market experts thought we should be asking. Michael’s enthusiasm and knowledge of mid-century modern is communicated to the buyers, and they get it.”
“We were recommended to Mike by family when we were re-located to Andrews AFB and the DC area from Tampa. We had a very limited time frame to not only purchase a house in an area that we were otherwise very unfamiliar with, but do so from another state. From our first communication over the phone with Michael, he made us feel at ease. He gladly took us on as clients even though our housing interests strayed from his passion of mid century modern architecture. He listened attentively as we formulated our needs and desires for our future home and directed us to potential homes to be toured when we visited the area. As inexperienced home buyers, he was patient as we asked a million questions and checked various resources to ensure we were making the best decision. He walked us through all of the minute details with clarity and expertise. His calm and easy going demeanor allowed us to feel comfortable in the process despite doing everything from a different state. We are grateful to have been connected with Michael. He is truly an expert in his field and a gem in the DC real state world. Working with him just made the whole house buying process seamless!”

“It’s been great working with you, honestly. Because of what we do, Bill and I are both super-picky about client service work, and we can’t think of a single thing we would have changed about our experience with you. We teach a customer service class in Annapolis…and I have a feeling we will be discussing you next class:).”

“Michael helped me and my siblings sell our late parent’s ‘atomic ranch’ (the place where we grew-up). Michael’s professionalism, intelligence and wit were instrumental in making what could have been a negative experience quite enjoyable. His passion for and deep understanding of the design influences that inspired our parents when they built the house ensured that everyone who looked at the house were educated about and similarly inspired by that vision. The house sold in days for a very satisfying price, but most satisfying is knowing that the new owners appreciate and share that vision.”
“My wife and I were very impressed with Michael Shapiro’s professionalism in his recent successful efforts on our behalf to sell our home in Hollin Hills. Michael is a true enthusiast of mid-century architecture and that enthusiasm on behalf of our ‘non-Goodman,’ but still special, Cass Neer 1956 house proved to be instrumental in its successful sale. We recommend Michael highly, whether you are selling or looking to buy your special house.”
–Randy and Maureen, sellers
“Michael Shapiro is an excellent Realtor. His expertise in DC’s mid-century modern homes and market is essential for anyone looking to buy in a limited niche where homes move quickly. Michael offered critical knowledge and moderation to our buying experience that allowed us to purchase our home well under what we were prepared to spend. Lastly, he was very responsive and patient when fielding our many questions. Thanks, Michael.”

“When it was time to sell our 1952 Charles Goodman house in Hollin Hills, we looked for a smart, hard working real estate agent who also had an appreciation for quality mid-century modern design. We knew and admired Michael through his website, moderncapitaldc.com, an excellent and informative resource for design enthusiasts and those looking to find a mid-century modern home of their own. Michael successfully marketed our house, handled multiple offers on it, and sold it in a week for over asking. Who could ask for anything more?”

“If you’re buying/selling modern residential real estate in the DC area, Michael Shapiro is your man. Here’s why: Modern occupies a niche market here that few Realtors understand. He knows the MCM neighborhoods, their history, their pioneering architects–all regularly featured on his website, which has garnered a growing following in DC and beyond. His passion for mod design/architecture runs deep. A supporter of modern historic preservation, he also works with architects, encouraging appreciation for time-honored principles of good design. He has built a track record for selling modern properties at highest price with shortest time on market. Within days, he sold our Hollin Hills home in a bidding war. A consummate professional, Michael is diplomatic, respectful, a skilled negotiator who produces results, and a pleasure to work with.”
