My New Listing: Stunning New Modern on .6 Acre – $829K
Here’s our latest project, which is listed for $829,000 and located here. This stunning custom design by Michael Cook, AIA, of the award-winning Cook Architecture, incorporates an original small 1951 Charles Goodman mid-century home into a new modern oasis with walls of glass and a spectacular cantilevered private master suite. The 2,311 square-foot home on a .6 acre wooded lot has 4 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms and two-car garage. Here is what the house looked like when we bought it.
The design transitions from the existing home to a series of soaring shed roofs, culminating in the secluded second-story master suite perched amid the lot’s mature trees. The existing and new parts of the home are connected by an “open plan” space, with the living room (located in the existing house) seamlessly flowing into the newly added combination kitchen and dining area with an 11-foot wall of glass. A new powder room is just off the living-dining spaces.
The centerpiece of the kitchen is the 11-foot quartz-topped island with sink and bar seating area. Ash wood sheathing houses the white, modernist cabinetry, wraps the structural beam and is used in custom shelves, cabinets and trim. The backsplash is crafted from Royal Mosa tile from Holland. A restored, vintage Arne Jacobsen light marks the dining space. Appliances are Bosch stainless steel.
The private second-story master suite is a soaring space with 11-foot ceilings, walls of glass, desk nook and 22-foot-long bank of custom closets. The master bathroom features Italian tile, separate soaking tub and large, glass-enclosed shower. With an ode to many California-style mid-century homes, the master suite has a second sink and vanity in a nook just outside the bathroom.
In addition to the master suite, the house has three additional bedrooms with renovated and expanded full bathroom. All bathrooms are finished with Italian wall and floor tiles.
While maintaining Goodman’s signature end-wall fireplace and storage cabinets (the former kitchen) in the original part of the house, the home has all new plumbing, electrical, insulation and low-E insulated, tempered double-paned windows. New Brazilian cherry floors sealed with low VOC matte finish have been installed throughout the house, which has two HVAC zones covering the original part of the house and the addition. The heat pump for the new part of the house and both water heaters are new.
New recessed lighting and adjustable art lights have been installed throughout the house, which is outfitted with motion sensors and door alarms through Ackerman Security.
The home’s design and window placement create a sense of privacy while connecting the interior space with the wooded surroundings. The home features a brick patio and expansive deck, and space and access for a future roof deck off the master bedroom.
The exterior of the home is a combination of brick, cement board siding and stained plywood. The roof on the original part of the house is asphalt shingles while the roof on the addition is a TPO “cool-roof” membrane that does not absorb heat from the sun.
The home is located amid a cluster of other mid-century and contemporary homes and is less than 10 miles to the Pentagon, National Airport and Pentagon City. It is just seven miles west of Old Town Alexandria and four miles to the restaurants and shopping in Bailey’s Crossroads. The highly rated Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology is located just down the street.
