My New Listing: A Bauhaus Oasis in the City – $1.899 Million

Arizona Ave._1

Exceptional Living: A Bauhaus Oasis in the City. That is a perfect way to describe this stunning custom mid-century modern home my real estate partner Sean Satkus and I just listed. Here is the full photo slideshow for your viewing pleasure.

The home was designed for luxurious living in a green, resort-like setting on a private 12,600 sq. ft. lot in the prestigious Washington neighborhood of Kent.

Truly one of the most exceptional properties in the nation’s capital, the house was designed in 1961 by prominent Washington architects Leon Brown, FAIA, and Thomas Wright, FAIA. The three bedroom, four full bathroom home with den, walls of glass and stunning open kitchen-dining living space has been meticulously renovated by the current owners. (Original architectural plans will convey with the home.)

A truly stunning view at dusk.

The flat-roof design heavily reflects the influence of Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius who was chairman of the Harvard Graduate School of Design’s Department of Architecture during Wright’s studies at the school.  The house is a stellar example of the tenets of modernism: an absence of ornamentation and rationality meets functionality. Walls of glass nest seamlessly into wood frames, floating wall bases create a unique visual appeal of the white walls – perfect for hanging art. Even the door frames are mounted inside the walls to reduce unneeded ornamentation.

Serenity and luxury welcome you. A tile walkway and Zen rock garden at the entrance reflects the beauty and calm of the serene modernist design. Impeccably updated by the current owners using the most luxurious modern design touches, the two levels of the home comprise a livable nearly 2,500 square feet.

The open kitchen-dining-living room has walls of glass blending inside and out.

Cozy and comfortable for everyday living. The living-dining-kitchen open floor plan promotes more social and family time and is perfect for entertaining. The island kitchen maximizes efficiency between the cooktop, the sink and the refrigerator–adopting the kitchen work triangle in practice. The induction wok helps prepare a plate of stir-fried vegetables in two minutes—with minimum energy use. Kitchen wall cabinets and drawers in the island provide ample space for storage.

The 10-foot island makes cooking and entertaining easy.

Each bedroom is a suite–connected to its own bathroom. Large windows allow each room to be filled with natural light during the day and with stars in the evening, and help plants to thrive. No need to have umbrellas as the carport has direct access to the house. An in-law suite with a separate kitchen and bathroom makes an excellent space for a guest or nanny. The driveway provides parking for several additional vehicles.

The lower level suite is a spa-like retreat.

The height of luxury. The kitchen island and cabinets were custom-made in Europe and have built-in Miele appliances (induction cooktop, induction teppanyaki, induction wok, dishwasher, microwave/oven combo, steam oven/oven combo, refrigerator, freezer) and Liebherr wine cooler. Each bathroom has Duravit fixtures (sinks, shower trays, wall-hung toilets), and high-end spray-jet/rain showers and faucets. The master bathroom has dual sinks, a freestanding soaking tub and a freestanding tub faucet. The in-law suite has a Subzero stainless steel refrigerator and Miele stainless steel washer and dryer.

The house is set in a green, resort-like setting on a private 12,600 sq. ft. lot.

True indoor-outdoor living. The home’s full-length walls of glass blend inside and out, bringing the vast backyard into the kitchen-dining-living space, which is marked by 10-foot ceilings. Glass sliders connect the interior space to the patio, providing a natural flow for entertaining or for cozy family gatherings amid the chirping birds and dancing fireflies.

The serene view from the patio: the terraced hillside with dry-laid stone retaining walls.

Oasis of green and light. From the open living/dining/kitchen there is the magnificent view of the backyard and its terraced hillside with dry-laid stone retaining walls. Skylights provide even more exceptional natural light.

Convenient location. Located in the prestigious Kent neighborhood, which houses many ambassadors’ residences among other prominent Washingtonians, the home offers easy access to major recreational trails, amenities and commuting options. Go to the Georgetown waterfront for Sunday brunch by foot along the C & O Canal tow path; run to Bethesda on the Capital Crescent trail; and hike through Battery/Kimberly Park, connecting to Glover Archibald Park, Dumbarton Park and then to Rock Creek Park.

Only a few minutes drive to Georgetown/World Bank/ IMF and the White House. Dulles International Airport is just 30 minutes via the Chain Bridge around the corner. Shops on MacArthur Boulevard and American University are a quick walk while the shops and Metro in Tenleytown are less than a five-minute drive away.
