Our Next Renovation Project: Goodman on .6 Acres
Last fall, as we were finishing our project in Pine Spring (which closed for $770K in January), architect Michael Cook and my wife and I found our next project. We spotted a listing of a small unassuming house buried in the woods inside the Beltway and just west of 395 in Lincolnia Park. The listing did not mention Charles Goodman, but we knew what it was right away just by looking at the large end-wall brick fireplace and wall of glass on the front of the house. Here is how the house looked when we purchased it in November. It is a nice, private .6 acre lot with a dramatic driveway approach to the house but it was very overgrown.
Michael and his architecture studio (Cook Architecture) have been designing away and we are now ready to start the transformation. The original house is a 3 bedroom/1 bath ranch (a Unit House No. 2 in Hollin Hills parlance) with a two-car garage, which was added later.

Below, you can see the windows are boarded up as we rebuild them to match Goodman’s original design.
Michael’s design will create a 4 bedroom/2.5 bath 2,300 square-foot home with a stunning, cantilevered master suite on a newly created second level. The central part of the house will be the new open kitchen-dining area with 10-foot ceilings.
The original part of the house will include the living room area and 3 bedrooms and one bath for children, guests or office space. The design can be seen as a progression of spaces and heights starting from the original Goodman and soaring higher to the master suite on the top left. The windows in the new part of the house reflect and evoke Goodman’s design, matching the three-foot width. Since the ceiling height on the new portion is higher, the windows are taller than Goodman’s typical seven feet and the operable parts will be on the top rather than on the bottom.
A prominent staircase from the main level to the new second-level master suite wraps around the back, visually connecting the original and new parts of the house.
The house is located amid a cluster of other mid-century and contemporary homes and less than 10 miles to the Pentagon, National Airport and Pentagon City. It is only seven miles to Old Town Alexandria.
