Under Contract: Stunning Renovation in Holmes Run Acres
I am excited to present my latest listing. Michael Cook of award-winning Cook Architecture and developer Steven Wheeler of Solid Constructs have transformed this mid-century modern home into a soaring modern and updated retreat. The home is located in the National Register of Historic Places-designated community of Holmes Run Acres inside the Beltway in Falls Church.
Here are some before and after pictures:
Sited on a .26 acre lot on a quiet cul-de-sac, the 4 bedroom, 2.5 bathrooms, nearly 2,200 square-foot home features a lower-level master suite and den, open modern kitchen and walls of glass. The overall design and window placement creates a sense of privacy while connecting the interior space with the natural surroundings. A large window on the side of the house frames a beautiful mature magnolia tree. A private second-story deck and modernist patios allow for entertaining and enjoying the outdoors.
While maintaining some vintage touches such as the exterior wood siding, original wood-beam ceilings and stairwell shelving to display your mid-century knickknacks, the two-level home has new plumbing, electrical and nearly all windows have been replaced with insulated glass.
The focus of the house is the open kitchen, dining and living room on the main, or upper level. The soaring living room is double-cantilevered and leads out to the private deck. The room features low voc matte red oak floors to match original flooring, and special lighting to highlight your artwork. This addition to the original house has been well-insulated. A powder room is conveniently located near the entrance for guests.
The kitchen features a large island with Silestone countertop, cantilevered bar area, Kitchen Aid stainless steel appliances and custom walnut shelves and accent cabinet to go along with the white, modernist cabinetry. The kitchen is open to the dining area with wood-burning fireplace and a wall of glass.
The main level also includes three bedrooms, with original hardwoods, and one full bathroom. All bathrooms are finished with white Italian wall tile and 12×24 modernist grey porcelain tile flooring.
The lower level includes the master suite with fireplace, large den or family room space and dedicated utility room. The redesign allowed for the typical mechanical footprint to be reduced, thus allowing for a large, sleek master bathroom with deep soaking tub/shower and double sinks.
The exterior of the home is a combination of the vintage wood siding and new cement board siding cut to match the original dimensions. The backyard features a new storage shed and two connected modernist patios for entertaining.
Holmes Run Acres is a mid-century modern community of 355 houses. The community was placed on the Virginia Landmarks Register in December 2006, and on the National Register of Historic Places in March 2007. The community recreation association features three pools and other recreation activities. Luria Park is a community favorite.
