The Alcoa Care-free Home in Richmond.
Only about two dozen of Charles Goodman’s Alcoa Care-free Homes were built around the country. In the D.C. area there, at least two were built and still standing: one in Hollin Hills and one near Richmond (pictured above.) I just read that nother one may have been built in Alexandria. Does anyone know about it?
If you are a fan of the mid-century modern home that was based on feedback from the 1956 Women’s Congress on Housing, the one built in Miami is for sale. It is being primarily marketed as a tear down. Only one of the listing’s photos has a partial shot of the exterior of the house in which you can see the signature windows grills. Thanks to Steve of the Rochester Care-free for discovering this listing. I hope someone buys the house in Florida and documents their efforts to preserve what is the left of the house.

There was an endangered Goodman custom house in my neighborhood and a highfalutin architect just razed it. Nothin left. I guess all his architectual schoolins didn’t learn him much about preservin an old-timey classic from the past.
If we can’t count on modern day award winning modernists to save way-back modernist designs, who can we count on?
