1978 ‘Usonian’ on 5+ Acres in Great Falls – $835K

Donald Reed Chandler

Architect Donald Reed Chandler came out of mid-century modern hotbed North Carolina State University in 1960. He first went to New York to work for Skidmore, Owings and Merrill before coming to Washington to work for Chloethial Woodard Smith. In 1968, he opened his own firm in McLean. In a description of his practice, the architect says: “We practice organic architecture and are devotees of Frank Lloyd Wright.” Scroll Chandler’s page at the great resource Triangle Modernist Houses and you can see that. One of the homes highlighted (the Rollo Residence), is now on the market and listed by its agent owner. The original late 1970s Usonian-style home was expanded to add a larger kitchen/dining area and larger master suite. It is set on 5.75 acres and has a pool. You can see the full slideshow here. Now in his 80s, Chandler is based in Washington, Va.
